What Can Guinea Pigs Not Eat? The Dangerous Foods List
Most guinea pig poisonings come from well-meaning sharing β a cheese puff, an onion ring, iceberg lettuce by the bucket. The safe list is long; the danger list is worth memorising.
Never feed, ever
- Onion, garlic, leeks, chives: toxic to blood cells.
- Potato and potato leaves: toxic starches and solanine.
- Iceberg lettuce as a meal: nearly zero nutrition, causes diarrhoea in volume.
- Chocolate, sweets, bread, pasta, dairy, meat: their guts cannot process any of it.
- Avocado: high fat and persin.
- Rhubarb and most houseplants: oxalates and unknown toxins.
- Nuts and seeds as snacks: choke and obesity risk β the ‘small animal mix’ bags with seeds are marketing, not food.
The moderation list (fine in small amounts)
Fruit (twice weekly, sugar), carrots (daily halves fine), spinach and kale (rotation, calcium), iceberg (tiny amounts only). When in doubt, the rule is: high-water leafy greens daily, everything else sparingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can guinea pigs eat banana?
Yes β a thin slice once or twice weekly. High sugar; good for pill-hiding when a pig needs medication.
Can guinea pigs eat cucumber every day?
Yes β it’s safe, hydrating and low-calorie, just nutritionally light. Pair it with peppers and leafy greens rather than relying on it.
What happens if a guinea pig eats onion?
Onions damage red blood cells β contact your vet promptly, especially with any quantity over a lick. Watch for lethargy and pale gums over the following days.
Is it OK to feed guinea pig muesli mixes?
No β the seed and flake components cause selective feeding, dental and weight problems. Plain pellets (timothy-based for adults) are the evidence-backed choice.
